baking

New website, cupcakes and early Saturday morning.

I (finally) converted my entire site over to wordpress! Bye-bye PHP. I also got rid of my “work” page, since that was mostly put up when I was looking for a job.  I started from the ground up, with a fresh WordPress install, finding a nice simple theme that I could adapt to my needs and then eventually moving the blog itself to the root directory. No more “/blog” business.  Now that it’s front and center, I really need to update it :)

These are not the cupcakes I'll be making at the shop

a cupcake I made once

Why am I awake at 8:00 on Saturday morning? Good question. I’d normally never see this side of a weekend, but I’ve taken on a part time job at the Cupcake shop my friend works at! I’m doing my first shift today – just a few hours training getting familiarized with processes and what not. I’m a bit nervous but mostly excited to use a different part of my brain, to be working in a real bakery, and to be working with my friend!

(I took cake decorating class with this friend, our passion for baking goes deep and so this should be extra fun).

This reminds me, I have to re-do the Anitabot icon with a chef’s hat. It’s actually somewhat appropriate now ;)

Lego Batman Video Game Cake!

These are edible minifigs!

These are edible minifigs!

Two posts in one day! This is important.

First there was Lego. Then there was Star Wars. Then there was the brilliance that was Lego Star Wars. Following that was the Genius that is Lego Star Wars the VIDEO GAME (See the trend here? Taking things Anitabot likes and combining them).  Seeing how well that did, Lego Indiana Jones was born, followed by probably the best of the series: Lego Batman the Video Game. (I’m playing it right now, I like it a lot). I didn’t think it could get any better than this, but then i find out (through JessPlease) that for the launch party of the game (to which I was somehow not invited to – must have gotten lost in the mail), Elissa Strauss (the writer of the “Confetti Cakes” book that I own and swear by) created a LEGO BATMAN VIDEO GAME CAKE.

That is just a series of words that are things I like:
Lego
Batman
Video Game
Cake

This is almost as awesome as when Aardman decided to make a Wallace & Gromit movie that featured BUNNIES.  (Awesomer than that would be a Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Wererabbit video game cake).

Anywho, Here is a picture I found from Elissa’s Confetti Cakes Blog. I can’t believe I didn’t find these earlier!

Click on the pic/links to go to her post :D

Le Swoon!  I think I need to make a Lego Anitabot … and then game… followed by cake. with bunnies.

Domo Kun Brownies II: The revenge of Domo Kun Brownie

Work pot-luck tomorrow and I know they’re expecting a repeat of the domo-kun brownies. Lacking time and my two partners, I decided to whip up one giant domo.

1 9×9 brownie pan
1 organics brownie mix (pc brand).
more fondant

result:

9x9 full size Domo Kun Brownie

I think it looks good. Improvement: The eyes are little half-spheres.  Next time – I’ll make the mouth recessed.  Well on my way to Total Domo Success!

Friday Five List-o-Matic: 5 BEST things about Fall(Late Edition)

I flaked on giving you a list this weekend, so I’m making it up to you! Since today IS the first official day of fall, my favourite season, I decided to tell you why!

1) The Smell. Yup, it’s pretty obvious but that crispness in the air that almost hurts my lungs when I inhale – it reminds me of going back to school, possibilities, change, the future and all that can go well. Even though when I was in school I’d start slacking by the 3rd week – those first three weeks were full of so much promise!

2) Sweaters. Sweater weather is the most ideal weather, but it’s not just ANY sweater – it’s hoodies – actually being able to wear the hood I suppose. I wish I had one of those ponchos with pom poms like I had when I was little. You know the kind:

Little Girl in Poncho

I was cuter.

3) Pumpkin Pie/Impending Gingerbread cookies. Not JUST pumpkin pie, but also turkey on thanksgiving and all those wonderful foods. My mom never made Turkey for thanksgiving, and I’d only RARELY get it for xmas. We did have family friends who indulged in this white custom and I loved it. Turkey, gravy, stuffing, potatoes… delicious – but perhaps the crown jewel of this meal is Pumpkin Pie. I eat so much of this stuff!  The best part is when the pumpkin pie starts to get scarce, I can be calmed by the fact that gingerbread is just around the corner!

4) Crunchy, colourful leaves.  Who doesn’t love this? Nazi’s. That’s who.

5) Halloween. Maybe I’m a secret goth kid… or just a kid… but dressing up in costumes is the best freakin’ idea in the world. No, I’m wrong, it’s the second best. The best idea in the world is BEING REWARDED WITH CANDY for dressing up in costumes. Seriously folks… does it get any better? No. Even if you don’t go trick-or-treating there are lots of benefits:
- Kids look less ugly and even cute
- Discounted halloween candy
- Being able to dress up! For some people this includes being able to dress up as a trollop… but I’m not on that list.

Anywho, that concludes my list. I know it wasn’t ground-breaking and well… it’s actually quite obvious because everyone loves fall and probably for the same reasons. Whatever.  I decided to not be a hater like I had been in my previous post.

In other news my friend Triton had a b-day party this weekend and I put together these:

TRI TON 30! (I didn't put the smarties on it)

TRI TON 30!

I didn’t put the smarites on it, they migrated from the other cake beside it. This was my 2nd time working with fondant, and the first trying to put it on a cake… ok, well cupcakes. that was easy. The real cake – didn’t turn out so well. Maybe next year.
