De Blob!
This past weekend I picked up the game “De Blob”, for Nintendo Wii. My brother had shown me the original version of the game, which was made by students as a kiosk game. It had one level, and no rewards for doing anything. All you did was tumble around a monochrome town painting buildings with your blobular – paint ingesting body.
Of course the Wii title that I am playing has evolved far beyond that. This game is FUN. The plot goes like this: fun colourful town is overtaken by horrible black and white aliens who have robbed the town of all it’s colour, enslaved it’s citizens, and turned it into a grey landscape. There is hope, in the form of the underground colour movement – they call on you (the Blob) to help them out. Each level you play you have specific goals, and also a lot of side challenges. You can roll around, jump on paint bots to absorb their colours, and paint buildings, citizens, trees, benches and other scenery by merely touching them. The three paint colours that are found in the world are red, yellow, & blue and you can mix them to create secondary colours (purple, orange, green and brown). You have a time limit for the level, but can extend it by unlocking clocks and other goodies.
One beef I do have with the game is that it only auto saves for you after you’ve completed a level. Since I am choosing to do every single little side mission per level, it’s taking me more than a few hours to do a level, and I can’t dedicate that much continuous time to it. I wish it could auto save after each challenge.
Another little thing that annoys me, and this is just minor is the fact that you have to use the remote to jump. It’s fun at first – flicking the thig to make Blob jump… but after a while it gets annoying and I wish i could just use a button
Other than that, it’s a pretty fun game, and a great first entry from the developers. If you have a wii I suggest you pick this up. It’s not too hard or ground breaking but it’s got style and is a lot of fun.’
I have yet to fully finish Lego Batman (not sure why, since I do enjoy it)… but I’m thinking of picking up the Harvey Birdman game after that… and maybe trying out Viva Pinata on the DS? I’m a bit wary as most DS ports I’ve played generally suck.
