Domo Kun Brownies II: The revenge of Domo Kun Brownie

Work pot-luck tomorrow and I know they’re expecting a repeat of the domo-kun brownies. Lacking time and my two partners, I decided to whip up one giant domo.

1 9×9 brownie pan
1 organics brownie mix (pc brand).
more fondant

I think it looks good. Improvement: The eyes are little half-spheres.  Next time – I’ll make the mouth recessed.  Well on my way to Total Domo Success!

Friday Five List-o-Matic: 5 BEST things about Fall(Late Edition)

I flaked on giving you a list this weekend, so I’m making it up to you! Since today IS the first official day of fall, my favourite season, I decided to tell you why!

1) The Smell. Yup, it’s pretty obvious but that crispness in the air that almost hurts my lungs when I inhale – it reminds me of going back to school, possibilities, change, the future and all that can go well. Even though when I was in school I’d start slacking by the 3rd week – those first three weeks were full of so much promise!

2) Sweaters. Sweater weather is the most ideal weather, but it’s not just ANY sweater – it’s hoodies – actually being able to wear the hood I suppose. I wish I had one of those ponchos with pom poms like I had when I was little. You know the kind:

Little Girl in Poncho

I was cuter.

3) Pumpkin Pie/Impending Gingerbread cookies. Not JUST pumpkin pie, but also turkey on thanksgiving and all those wonderful foods. My mom never made Turkey for thanksgiving, and I’d only RARELY get it for xmas. We did have family friends who indulged in this white custom and I loved it. Turkey, gravy, stuffing, potatoes… delicious – but perhaps the crown jewel of this meal is Pumpkin Pie. I eat so much of this stuff!  The best part is when the pumpkin pie starts to get scarce, I can be calmed by the fact that gingerbread is just around the corner!

4) Crunchy, colourful leaves.  Who doesn’t love this? Nazi’s. That’s who.

5) Halloween. Maybe I’m a secret goth kid… or just a kid… but dressing up in costumes is the best freakin’ idea in the world. No, I’m wrong, it’s the second best. The best idea in the world is BEING REWARDED WITH CANDY for dressing up in costumes. Seriously folks… does it get any better? No. Even if you don’t go trick-or-treating there are lots of benefits:
- Kids look less ugly and even cute
- Discounted halloween candy
- Being able to dress up! For some people this includes being able to dress up as a trollop… but I’m not on that list.

Anywho, that concludes my list. I know it wasn’t ground-breaking and well… it’s actually quite obvious because everyone loves fall and probably for the same reasons. Whatever.  I decided to not be a hater like I had been in my previous post.

In other news my friend Triton had a b-day party this weekend and I put together these:

TRI TON 30! (I didn't put the smarties on it)

TRI TON 30!

I didn’t put the smarites on it, they migrated from the other cake beside it. This was my 2nd time working with fondant, and the first trying to put it on a cake… ok, well cupcakes. that was easy. The real cake – didn’t turn out so well. Maybe next year.

Domo Kun Brownies!

It’s a well known fact that chocolate fudge brownies are awesome. It’s also a fact that Domo Kun is awesome. What was recently discovered (by myself and 2 work chums) is that Domo Kun Brownies are awesome x2.  Since we made them, I believe this also makes us awesome.

The materials used: 1 Fudge Brownie Box Mix (easier), Pre-made fondant, food colouring gels, sharp paring knives, a ruler, paper and a picture of domo kun.

We dyed various bits of fondant the appropriate colours: black for the eyes and red for the mouth. The fondant is naturally white so that worked well for the teeth. While the brownies were baking, we drew up schematics to get the dimensions correct.

Then, we took to the task of cutting the individual pieces. A rectangle for the mouth, a long string cut up and then rolled into little balls for the eyes, and the hardest part: the teeth.

Pictures of Domo would indicate that he has four teeth across the top & bottom of his mouth. The mouths we had created were really tiny, which meant that the teeth had to be even smaller!  Jess & Kate did a pretty awesome job with this though:

After this, we just cut up the brownies, flipped them upside down (to achieve that fuzzy domo fur look) and placed the eyes & mouths on them! ta-da!

They are quite yummy.

Rabbid Cookies!

I made these cookies last night! I found the idea & instructions from the fabulous “Snack or Die” site.  This is a site that is dedicated to video game baked goods.  The crossover of two of my hobbies in this way, is something I thought would be very niche… but as it turns out there are a lot of other game nerds that love to bake & decorate as well.  This is awesome!

I used a vanilla sugar cookie & royal icing recipe from the book “confetti cakes“.  This book also outlines a technique called “flooding” – a way to acheive a smooth glossy finish of royal icing on cookies.  This was the first time I attempted that technique and I learned a lot of things.  Firstly, the royal icing I had made was a bit too stiff. That made squeezing it out of a #2 tip a bit difficult. It was hard to get the bunny head/ear/mouth outlines to be perfectly smooth and rounded.

As you can see, that left a some what ragged border around them. The key to flooding a cookie is to water down the royal icing until it reaches a smooth, water consistency, then after dabbing some onto the cookie, using a toothpick to guide the icing to the corners. I chose to do the full head white outline first, then the pink ears & mouth outlines. Then I flooded the ears and mouths, followed finally by the face flooding. It was a bit difficult to flood around the ears as there was only a small amount of space between the white outline and the pink inner ear part.  Getting the royal icing to the exact consistency was difficult. I was afraid to put too much water into it, but I was also finding I kept adding more as it was just a bit too thick to work with, as far as flooding went.  I also noticed that my hand was shaking so much when I was attemptint pipe the outline of the bunnies. I’ll definitely have to work on that. I was also amazed at how much work it was! It took me a few hours to create just 14 bunnies!

It was worth it! They were well received.  Next time, I’m going to make their eyes bigger and their expressions crazier.
