Toronto’s first snow of 2008
Yesterday Toronto had its first snow. It was a bit early and defintiely surprising. For the most part it was the really wet flurries kind that doesn’t stay on the ground (much to many people’s relief)… But I was still kind of excited.
Unlike the majority of people I know, I LOVE SNOW. And by extension, I enjoy winter. There are a few crappy things about winter, like how it’s really dark out early and in the extreme cold it sucks if you have to leave. Then there is driving in the snow which is not good. but… for the most part I love it. IF it’s a cold barren snow-free winter I’m far less happy. The WORST part of winter is people complaining about how awful it is. Crying like babies and threatening to move somewhere warm. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that… I could never live somewhere that was hot 100% of the time. I’d go crazy. I love that our seasons change, and they change drastically.
Perhaps it’s because I own a super warm parka, tall thinsulated weatherproof boots and have enough body fat to keep me somewhat warm. Or, maybe it’s the fact that I’m eternally a kid and snow just fills my heart with glee.
Snow this early also reminds me of my chidhood, those years when it snowed on Halloween when we went trick-or-treating and also had to wear snow-pants! le sigh!
For fun, here’s a video of the first snow from last year.

I also love the snow. Notice how those people that threaten to move somewhere warm never follow through? Cowards.
This year has apparently been the coldest so far this century! Of course given we’re only 8% into the century that doesn’t say much. It’s due to an unusually low minimum in the 11 year solar cycle, and doesn’t in any way discount long-term anthropogenic global warming (you know some fools will be claiming exactly that).
While waiting to cross the street the other day I noticed the small person next to me was wearing a coat somewhat like the polar bear suit you used to have, except brown. My first reaction was “Oh, there is an Ewok standing beside me.”
More videos! That was cool.
For the record, I feel that it’s my duty as a Canadian to complain about snow and I was horrified yesterday. Kinda jealous that you love it.
@Jess > All the other videos I have are of bunnies :/ I can’t help but love it – it just puts a smile on my face… though that snow was wet and crappy and way too early so I can understand why it would horrify people.
